The fact is, that’s  twenty-five percent of the set you just paid for!  It would seem to be more sensibly to purchase clubs that you are going to use, or better still, that you are capable of using.  A extra wedge or two, or a couple of hybrids to replace the 3 and 4 irons would be the common sense approach, but you are not given that choice when purchasing clubs off the rack.

A competent custom clubmaker will fit you with a set of irons that you will use, and it may be as few as five or six conventional irons, a hybrid or two and maybe an extra wedge.  Remember, the clubs you are looking at “off the rack” were factory made.  They may, or they more likely, may not be the right length, right lie, right shaft flex and so on for your swing.  A true custom club fitting eliminates this problem.

When dealing with Set Make Up, we should not forget the driver.  Remember the clubmaker’s credo which states: The longer the length, the lower the loft, the heavier the weight and the stiffer the shaft, the harder the club will be for any golfer to hit.”  Also, a driver does not have to be a driver.  It simply has to be the club the golfer can hit the farthest distance from the tee and keep the ball in the short grass as often as possible.  In many cases this can best be accomplished with a driver loft that resembles that of a 3-wood.  Depending on the loft of the chosen driver, the longest fairway wood does not have to be a three wood.  Many golfer’s will hit a 5-wood or even a 7-wood farther than a 3-wood simply because these woods have more loft.

Just remember, when selecting clubs, the longest iron in your bag regardless of the number on the bottom, should be the longest iron you hit with confidence and on center the vast majority of the time.  If it happens to be a 5-iron or 6-iron or even a 7-iron, so be it.  That club can then be followed by a hybrid or two, then a fairway wood or two, and finally a proper lofted driver.
You could very well end up with a set that contains somewhat less than fourteen clubs and that’s just fine, at least you will have a use for everything “in the bag”, and you won’t be paying for clubs that you don’t need or don’t use.

After a long, cold winter, it seems the golf season is just around the corner.  That being said, it would be a good ideal to take a look at your golf equipment, in particular your grips.  Many of us overlook the importance of good grips.  After all, “Good golf begins with a good grip”, therefore a good grip begins with good grips.  Worn, smooth, shiny grips inhibits your chance of gripping the club properly and effectively reduces the chance of making good contact with the ball.

Along with new grips, don’t over look the sizing of the grips.  Grips come in various sizes and can easily be enlarged by adding masking tape to the shaft before the grip is installed.  A simple measurement can determine the best and most comfortable size for you.  Also, the texture of the grip is important.  Grips are made of various materials which creates a different feel from grip to grip.
Certainly it is to your advantage to have grips that feel comfortable and are fit properly to your hand size.  At Evergreen Golf Centre, we stock a full line of grips in various sizes, textures and colors and will properly install the grips to your size and comfort.

Well as the weather continues to change for the good and then for the bad it continues to temp us and give us the itch…Spring in my mind is the best time of year and one of the only times where you can hit bad shots and not get extremely mad until they start piling up by June. I not only get excited for the golf portion but also the teaching portion. The most interesting part is seeing all the many bad habits (well, good ones are out there too) in everyone’s golf swing. I hope to hear from the Lethbridge area about problems in their own golf swings. Me, Dean and Cam are here for private and group lessons.

When will Tiger Woods return to golf?

I will leave you with an opinion of mine on this question.  Please write your own thoughts on this topic to get the conversation flowing…

He will return in a real tournament at the Masters (the Tavistock Cup doesn’t count but he  might possibly play there since it’s his own backyard). This will be one of the biggest and most hyped returns in sports history with everyone watching. (Millions for a morning press conference) This will be his time to come back and shine and regain the attention of his fans while settling everything properly with his family. Golf needs him….

Till the next time….
